Regina Jaquess, arguably the greatest female water skier of all time, announced today that she has signed with Nautique Boats, ending a two-decade relationship with Malibu. The 39-year-old is the current world record holder in slalom, setting her most recent mark last year at the Malibu Open.

“I am incredibly honored and excited to represent the Nautique brand,” shared Jaquess in a press release on the decision. She added, “I look forward to competing for many more years and being able to ski behind the #1 towboat in the world every day.”

This marks a significant departure for Jaquess, whose affiliation with Malibu Boats dates back to 2010. At that time, as Malibu’s newest addition to the waterski team, she made history by breaking Kristi Overton Johnson’s world slalom record, which had stood since 1996. Since then, Jaquess has broken the world slalom record eight times, totaling nine records—more than any other woman in history. Few skiers in the world have deeper ties or are more associated with a boat company than Jaquess with Malibu.

However, Jaquess’s move comes amidst significant turbulence at the Tennessee-based boat manufacturer. Malibu has faced scrutiny in recent months, with its stock value plummeting and allegations of inventory fraud emerging from one of the nation’s largest boat dealers. The dismissal of Dennis Kelley, a 30-year company veteran, earlier this year fueled speculation about the discontinuation of the TXi model. While the company has denied these rumors and Malibu Boats Australia recently reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Australian water skiing, the scaling back of support for tournament water skiing in the US has clearly soured Jaquess’ relationship with the company.

In her announcement, Jaquess made what appeared to be a thinly veiled criticism of her former sponsor, expressing excitement at “having the opportunity to align with a company that is true to its water ski heritage.” Ultimately, this marks a disappointing end to one of the most iconic water ski brand relationships of the 21st century.

Nautique appears eager to welcome the disaffected world record holder, with their President, Greg Meloon, expressing enthusiasm for the partnership. “Throughout her career, Regina has set new expectations and inspired the waterski community. We are looking forward to her next level of performance behind the Ski Nautique!”

Jaquess, who has raised the women’s world record from 1 to 5 at 10.25m (41’ off), has her sights set on one final frontier. She expressed her desire to “catch that elusive 6 ball at 10.25m and go beyond into territory no other female water skier has ever ventured.”

The fate of Thomas Degasperi, Malibu’s sole remaining water ski athlete, remains uncertain for now. Losing the support of one of only three boat manufacturers would be a significant blow to the sport. Hopefully, Malibu can weather the storm and bounce back once economic conditions improve. However, for now, Malibu’s loss appears to be Nautique’s gain.

ORLANDO, FL (April 15, 2024) – Nautique is thrilled to introduce the current women’s slalom world record holder, Regina Jaquess, as the newest member of the Nautique team. Regina’s extraordinary talents and achievements behind the boat throughout her career have established her as one of the most dominant and decorated athletes in the world of women’s three-event waterskiing.

“Being in and around the water has been a major part of my life. My parents were competitive skiers and my dad was a Nautique promo boat owner for 17 years, so I grew up learning to ski with the best boat on the planet. I quickly learned what a great community water skiers are and consider all of my ski friends part of our family,” said Team Nautique athlete Regina Jaquess. “Training at Sunset Lakes at an early age allowed me to continue training behind the Ski Nautique, which allowed me to set 21 AWSA National Records in slalom and tricks, even before I started my journey in international competition. I am convinced that having the opportunity to align with a company that is true to its water ski heritage will help me excel on the water and make it easier to catch that elusive 6 ball at 10.25m and go beyond into territory no other female water skier has ever ventured. I am incredibly honored and excited to represent the Nautique brand that has had such a profound impact on my ski career. I look forward to competing for many more years and being able to ski behind the #1 towboat in the world every day, the Ski Nautique. It’s a dream come true!”

Outside of her accomplishments on the water, one of Regina’s passions is to give back to the sport she loves. Additionally, she brings an encouraging personality and level of professionalism that exudes high moral standards, and her love for being on the water makes her a perfect fit for joining the Nautique brand. Regina has dedicated her life to becoming one of the world’s most decorated women’s waterskiers, a multi-time world record holder and is a practicing Doctor of Pharmacy.

“I am excited to welcome Regina Jacquess to the Nautique team heading into the 2024 season,” said Nautique President Greg Meloon. “Throughout her career, Regina has set new expectations and inspired the waterski community. We are looking forward to her next level of performance behind the Ski Nautique!”

Regina Jaquess (Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.), the No. 1 ranked skier on the IWWF World Rankings List and current women’s world slalom record holder, has now won every major slalom tournament in the world during her legendary career. Jaquess won her first career Moomba Masters slalom title on Monday at the 63rd Nautique Moomba Masters, presented by GM Marine, on the Yarra River in Melbourne, Australia.

Jaquess, 39, scored 2-1/2 buoys at 39-1/2 feet off in the finals, edging Canada’s Whitney McClintock, the defending champion, who scored 2 buoys at 39-1/2 feet off. Elizabeth Montavon (Lake Worth, Fla.) scored 4 buoys at 38 feet off to place third.

Jaquess, who works full time running her own business, last competed at the Moomba Masters in 2012, when she finished third in women’s slalom. But she is no stranger to the top of the podium Down Under. She also won women’s tricks at the 2003 Moomba Masters to go along with her now 2024 Moomba Masters slalom title. Jaquess also placed third in women’s jump (162 feet) in this year’s event.

Regina Jaquess, arguably the greatest water skier of all time, has seemingly conquered everything there is to achieve in world water skiing. The only skier in the 21st century to win professional titles in all four disciplines — slalom, trick, jump, and overall — there is one crown that still eludes her. Since winning tricks on her debut visit to Melbourne as a 19-year-old in 2003, Jaquess has returned several times to the Yarra but is yet to clinch a Moomba Masters slalom title.

Jaquess, who balances her professional water ski aspirations alongside owning and operating a compounding pharmacy in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, has rarely traveled outside of the U.S. over the last decade. Typically reserving international travel for titled events, such as the World Championships, Jaquess has not competed at the Moomba Masters since 2012.

Her last visit to Melbourne was her most fruitful in the slalom event, placing third behind the Canadian pair of Whitney McClintock and Breanne Dodd. Across her three trips to the Moomba Masters, she has placed fourth, fifth, and third in slalom, incredibly advancing to finals across all three events at each tournament.

This is interesting because nightmare tales of international athletes flying all the way to Australia only to miss their first pass in the challenging conditions of the Yarra are common. Yet Jaquess has performed consistently on each of her visits.

Jaquess, who turns 40 this year, is entering the twilight of her professional career, and perhaps has decided to attempt to conquer the Yarra one last time before hanging up the skis. She will come up against her old foe Whitney McClintock Rini, who has won more Moomba slalom titles than any other woman, as well as a host of other strong contenders.

The American will also compete in the jump event against the local favorite Jacinta Carroll, who is attempting to retain her Moomba crown just 100 days after giving birth. Jaquess, who won the King of Darkness jump event last year, may also challenge for the Moomba jump title.

In a groundbreaking performance at the Malibu Open in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Regina Jaquess solidified her status as one of the greatest women’s slalomers of all time by setting a new pending world slalom record of 5 at 10.25 meters (41 off). The professional tournament, boasting over two decades of history, returned to LymanLand in Alabama, the home site of the University of Alabama Water Ski Team, for the second consecutive year.

In an interview following her record-breaking performance, Jaquess shared her elation and gratitude, saying, “Oh my gosh, I don’t even know what to say, I’m shaking. I think getting out of two this morning unlocked a little bit of mental pressure because it was my best score, I haven’t gotten a three since my ACL [surgery] so thank you Andrews Sports [Medicine] for getting me back together … This is unbelievable and to do it at the Malibu Open behind Malibu Boats … I got mental, I should have run it … it felt so amazing.”

Jaquess, who played a significant role in organizing this year’s Malibu Open, spoke about the challenges of both competing and running the event. Despite the demanding nature of organizing such a major event, she emphasized her love for it and how it allows Malibu Boats to stay connected with the sport of water skiing. She also acknowledged the mental preparation required to achieve peak performance while juggling event management responsibilities.

Throughout the qualifying rounds on Friday, exceptional performances were witnessed across all events. Notably, all six women ran the 11.25-meter line (38′ off) in at least one round, while eight men conquered the 10.75-meter line (39.5′ off). The jump event also witnessed a display of remarkable talent, with seven athletes achieving jump scores exceeding 220 feet (67 meters).

However, amidst the achievements, concern emerged regarding the participation of female athletes. Despite an impressive prize purse of $15,200 for women’s slalom, one of the largest in the sport, only six women participated in the tournament. The situation was even more concerning in women’s jump, where only four athletes entered, and one among them had a personal best below 40 meters. Water skiing has taken significant steps in recent years towards narrowing the gender pay gap and providing equal prize money for both men and women. Nevertheless, given the limited support from female participants, it may become challenging for organizers to maintain the current prize money structure or even include women’s events in the future.

Jaquess’ record was officially approved by the IWWF on October 27th, 2023.
